It's a shame that media sensation Michelle Wie is not playing at the 2009 US Women's Open. I think that her not qualifying for the event is a big blow to the LPGA especially now that everyone's focus is not on the event itself but the requested resignation of LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens. Michelle Wie has a very big fan base and even if you are not a fan, admit it, you like watching and reading about her. She is one of if not the biggest name, and the most intriguing player in women's golf today. Her appearance at the US Women's Open will definitely attract attention from viewers and fans everywhere that would give the LPGA and the tournament the boost it very much needs.
The LPGA 2009 Official Money List has Michelle Wie ranked at #12. She is also in the top 10 on the list of Top 10 Finishes this year. So the question is, how can a player of this rank not qualify? There is clearly something wrong with this scenario.

Miss Wie should cut the crap and learn to win a women's golf tournement. She always has an excuse. She was handed sponsor waivers, and now when she has to qualify by
ReplyDeleteplaying golf, she can't make it. If she didn't try to play the men's circuit, she could be a winner by now. Just do it.
Wie doesn't 'deserve' to be in the US Open, our national championship- she needs to earn it thru the different qualification standards. Maybe someday her father will say he's sorry for his mismanagement. She never learned early how to get thru crunch time, and now she's paying for it.
ReplyDeleteWow - reading the last comment made me chuckle at how ignorant some people can be. The article was simply about the 2009 US Open needing Michelle Wie - to attract viewers to an otherwise boring event. This is so true! She is exciting to watch, and happens to be playing really good golf this year. Perhaps all of you "haters" out there with your 20 handicap should just put your criticism aside for a minute and enjoy the sport...
ReplyDeleteI haven't commented back when I received the first two comments above because, to be honest, I didn't know what to say. Thank you to the person who wrote the 3rd comment for diffusing the hate, and Thank You for getting my article's "POINT". There is apparently an Anti-Michelle-Wie-Movement going on and just like you, I hope that people can put their criticisms aside and enjoy the sport. :)
ReplyDeleteGlover , you are right. Without Wie I had little interest watching. Like it or not she is a draw. Granted, had her career early on be handled a little better this article would probably not have been necessary, but that is water under the bridge. Like I only watch the PGA when Woods is playing, so with the LPGA when Wie is playing.
ReplyDeleteWhats important is the usga gave a "special exemption" to Laura Davies. That really really boost ratings!
